Sew what

It’s hard to tell if I’m keeping Dustin awake, or if he’s keeping me awake. The last three nights neither one of us have really slept. My eyes are stingy and it takes me a very. long. time. to get out of bed.

The upside is last night I got to lay in bed and feel the baby rolling, kicking and tumbling around in my expanding belly. I adore feeling that close to one of my children. I’m used to being pregnant, but that sensation never looses it’s affect on me. The baby is still to small for anyone else to feel, so right now it’s just my private, special time with her/him.

We are scheduled for our second ultrasound next week and we could find out the gender if we wanted to. I don’t think I’m going to. And despite how adamant I was after Christian’s birth against EVER doing natural child birth again….I think I’m going to do that again as well.

This time around nesting is totally different. I’m not dreaming and googling kids rooms. I’m not spending a million hours researching breast or formula, car seats, whether pacifiers are ok, parenting styles, etc. We’re set as far as knowing what to do with a newborn. This time, the nesting is weird, for me at least. I have this crazy desire to sew. The problem….I DON’T SEW! Let me just share that I am in no way inclined towards sewing. My sewing consists of safety pins and glue. The only reason I have a sewing box at all is because I had to for my high school Home Economics class. The box consists of rusty pins and a sophomore homework assignment I never turned in.

Last week I made a valance for the kids room out of their Pottery Barn quilt. How do you do that if you don’t sew? Safety pins of course! That’s right, the entire thing is held together with safety pins!

Yesterday my nesting had me wanting to make something that would cool down car seats in the 114 degree AZ heat. Those metal buckles can put a nasty burn on young baby flesh! So I came up with a design, found some baby blankets the kids don’t use and set about my project. Safety pins wouldn’t work this time so I tried glue, then hot glue, then tacky glue, then no stitch glue….nothing worked. So now I’m sewing.

I don’t own a sewing machine, so I’m doing it all by hand. I know there are certain kinds of stitches out there in the freaky sewing world. I’m just doing whatever will hold my dreamed up contraption together. Last night Dustin and one of his male coworkers sat around with me and taught me how to sew. Touching.

I’ll post some pics of my project once it’s done. Who knows maybe I could sell it? Although I’d probably have to buy a sewing machine. Nevermind.

I’m no veteran seamstress, but I had to reacquaint myself with the sewing machine when I made Lila’s Halloween costume last year. You should get one!! They make things SO much easier, and it really opens up your options as far as what you can sew.

I’m thinking about asking for one for Christmas or my birthday, just a cheap one. I don’t sew really either but I’m getting more interested as well. My friend just started making beautiful quilts and I figured that if she can sew that I’m at least able to learn. It does seem like a good skill to possess.

I have some questions about you having a natural birth after a C-section, if I’m remembering correctly you had Maddie by C-section and then didn’t have one with Christian. I’m kind of being pushed into another C-secion but I think I really want to try a vaginal birth this time. I just have some questions and would like to chat with someone who actually did it rather than only have research and hear say. My e-mail is teacherlapointe@yahoo.com if you get some extra time (I know you are busy). Thanks so much!!!!

I got all ambitious about sewing and made 2 quilts. Took me 3 years to finish the first one (in my defense it was queen size and we moved in with my in-laws in the middle of it) and the second took 6 months (once again in my defense I did have a newborn!). Try posting an ad on Freecycle looking for a sewing machine, or try craigslist or yard sales. Sometimes Joann’s Fabric store has free sewing classes, you might want to check one of those out? I love to sew, just have zero time, blah.
I had an epidural with Carter and felt nothing at all, I didn’t like it. I’m thinking next one will be natural, you know if there ever is a next one!
